Apple Prepares Next-Gen MacBook Pro with Touchscreen and Hole-Punch Display

Apple is gearing up for a major evolution in its MacBook Pro lineup – a premium model featuring a touch-enabled OLED display and a hole-punch front camera design. According to Bloomberg, this could be one of the biggest design overhauls in years, hinting at a possible release around late 2026 or early 2027.

A Big Step Toward Touch Technology on Macs

For years, Apple resisted adding touch input to MacBooks, arguing that macOS was built for cursor-based interaction. However, industry insiders suggest that the company is now ready to merge the touch-friendly experience of iPads with the power and versatility of macOS.

The new MacBook Pro models are reportedly codenamed K114 and K116, and they could introduce several next-generation upgrades:

  • Touchscreen OLED Display: First time ever on a MacBook Pro, offering richer contrast, higher brightness, and precise touch control.

  • Hole-Punch Camera Design: Replacing the traditional notch, similar to Apple’s latest iPhone approach.

  • Thinner & Lighter Chassis: A refreshed body with improved portability without compromising on durability.

  • Upgraded Hinge Mechanism: Redesigned to enhance stability during touch interactions.

  • Powered by M6 Chip: The next Apple Silicon expected to deliver faster performance and greater energy efficiency.

Why This Shift Matters

Apple’s decision to explore touch-enabled laptops could redefine how professionals and creators use Macs. With most creative apps like Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro already supporting gesture inputs, adding touch interaction might bridge the workflow between MacBooks and iPads more seamlessly.

At the same time, Apple faces challenges such as:

  • Higher production costs due to OLED and touch panel integration.

  • Software optimization, since macOS has traditionally been pointer-driven.

  • Component supply constraints that could delay mass production.

Despite these hurdles, Apple’s move signals that it’s willing to innovate within the Mac ecosystem — not just through chips, but through hardware design evolution.

Expected Timeline

Industry analysts predict that the touchscreen MacBook Pro could debut by late 2026, initially targeting professional users. A broader rollout to MacBook Air or entry-level models might follow in later years, depending on consumer response and production feasibility.

Expected Phase Timeline Key Features
Prototype Testing 2025–2026 Touch OLED panel & camera redesign
Launch Window Late 2026 / Early 2027 14-inch & 16-inch MacBook Pro
Expansion 2027–2028 Wider rollout across Mac lineup

What It Means for Users

If the rumors hold true, Apple’s next-generation MacBook Pro could mark a turning point — merging the flexibility of touch devices with the power of desktop computing. It won’t just be an aesthetic refresh but a strategic shift toward more interactive, creative, and modern workflows.

While Apple hasn’t officially confirmed the details, multiple supply chain leaks and design filings suggest that the era of the touch-enabled Mac might be closer than ever.
